I’ve got another Seanan McGuire for y’all. This one is the latest installment of her Incryptid series. The basic premise of the Incryptid books is- what if all the urban legends and myths about creatures and magic were real? What if there was an entire cryptid community living under the noses of humanity? And what if there was an order devoted to wiping those creatures out- sentient or no, peaceful or no? And what if a family broke away from that order and devoted themselves to studying, helping, and learning about the cryptid world, while also keeping people safe?
Welcome to the Price family. Every couple books follows a different Price child or relative.
This particular book is a direct sequel to the preceding novel and contains OH SO many spoilers for the series as a whole. My review of it? It’s good. Read it.
Now I’m going to pivot to the joy of this series as a whole. Seanan McGuire has created an intricate world that lives just beneath our own and it is fascinating. We explore this world through the Price family, each and everyone of whom is different and interesting. When I started the series, I fell in love with the Price sister I was first introduced to. I was then just a bit grumpy when, in book 3, I was shifted to her brother. Of course I soon fell in love with him and was equally grumpy when I was shifted to their youngest sister two books later.
Can you see where this is going?
I haven’t even mentioned the mice yet. Oh lord the mice. There is a colony of intelligent mice who worship the members of the Price family as gods and have formed intricate religions around each one. They are tragic. They are hilarious. I never knew I wanted a colony of weirdly religious mice to follow me around until I read these books.
