Here I am again, another Dresden file closed! And I’m still along for the ride. The gang is all here: the entire wizard White Council, a blast from the past Dresden thought was gone, kooky fairy godmother Leanansidhe, more oodles of fairies, wolfy friends, and head of SI Karrin Murphy. Speaking of, I had NO IDEA he was spelling her first name like that until I started looking up quotes for my post title: the perils of audiobook. That led me to read another review and discover many more name unique spellings he used for other characters and wow I don’t know if I’d like this book as much reading it versus audio (how I’ve consumed all of them) because some of them are distracting! But I digress.
I’m already only a few pages (minutes) away from finishing book five so book four is already firmly in my rear view mirror. So, what do I remember? Harry is the same lovable chauvinistic scamp, who pendulums from incredibly observant and incredibly daft almost on a dime, especially where women are concerned. He usually pulls the pieces together in the end, but is always tied to the train tracks before everything clicks into place.
In this installment, our reluctant hero must work for the Winter Queen to identify who killed the Summer Knight in order to clear her name, and broker a deal for the White Council. (It’s all very Sharks and Jets except it’s Wizards and Fairies and also Vampires). Harry is also still dealing with the aftermath of laying holy hell upon the Red Court in book 3, but that’s diddly compared to trying to outwit, or at least outlast, the fairies. Butcher lost me a little at Chlorofiend (love the name, but that whole sequence dragged a bit for me) but in the end I’m still a loyal fan and spoiler, book five I have found a delight and I’ve heard it’s when things REALLY get going. Until next time…
