I continued my October Spoopy Reads with There’s Someone Inside Your House. What I will say about these horror books is that I really wish there were more of a supernatural element to them, because it’s just normal people murdering and it’s kind of a bummer. Serial killers really ruin my vibe.
It seems so innocent, an object in a place you didn’t expect, an open door that you swore was closed, some mysterious footprints…but it could mean a killer is in the house. In this story, a small Nebraska town is shook by the murders of several of its brightest students. The first is the lead of the school musical, a promising singer and actress. Next is the quarterback of the football team. Third is a nerdy gamer, which really shakes everyone because it shows that nobody is safe. The killer is actually revealed about halfway through the book, which threw me for a loop. Part of me expected some twist or a secret accomplice, but no…it was just that person still killing.
Our protagonist is a recent transfer from Hawaii, Makani Young. She moved away to live with her grandmother because of a mysterious secret in her past. Now, Makani seems to be the new focus of the murderer, and she worries it’s because they found out her secret. There are all sorts of signs that the killer was in her house that Makani misses and blames on her grandmother’s memory issues. It gives me shivers to think about. It’s not a super scary book, but decently thrilling. The multiple murder scenes did bum me out…I really hate having to read about some evil person being evil over and over and over. I just wished they would be smarter, maybe fight back more.
