The Breakfast Club goes slightly wonky as five students enter detention, but only four leave. The nerd, the princess, the jock and the criminal are those left standing, while the deceased – the gossip blogger – had been about to ruin each of their lives by publishing their deepest secrets in his latest post. So who did the deed?
It’s a slow burn to find out, following each of the group as they deal with the fall out from Simon’s death, the media having turned their lenses on them and blown their secrets wide anyway, further fuelling the fire of suspicion surrounding them. With each of the group narrating their own chapters, each of them reveal they’re not quite what their original stereotype would have you think, although I must admit that at times I didn’t quite feel as though each of their voices really sounded that different from each other. That didn’t stop me from getting more sucked in as time went on and I kept trying to figure things out.
Slightly dragging in a few sections, while I may not be screaming from the rooftops about it I must admit it was still a decent enough read to make my lunch breaks fly by, and I didn’t get distracted by much else while I was reading it.
So, while it might sound like I’m damning this with faint praise, it would very definitely make a good beach read or for when you’re not in the mood for anything too heavy going.
