Shani is headed to Mexico with a group of friends to stay with their rich-but-do-they-even-like-her? frenemy, Lena. She has an amazing beach house totally cut off from the world and a darling adopted sister who is currently dying from kidney failure thanks to an accidental-but-probably-not poisoning at a party. Said party was attended by all those at this fabulous weekend away. Coincidence?
But Shani isn’t worrying about any of that at the start, she’s too busy fantasising about what she’ll do to Brit boy Flynn when she gets him alone. Until the garage blows up with one of their number inside and all the phones are dead. Then there’s the gut aches and vomiting and waking up surrounded by rattle snakes.
Because somebody is using this weekend to find out what really happened to Robin last year. Who poisoned her, and why?
Man, I still love Christopher Pike. This is kind of a quicker one and even with all that plot there’s not much to it. It hasn’t aged all that well, what with the ‘Indian’ wise man wandering around speaking in parables and having a bird that ‘talks’ to people. And I think Pike really did his research on dialysis machines since there’s a lot of description about what it looks like and how it works. I could have been satisfied with ‘she was hooked up to a dialysis machine’ but no. Shani is a bit blah as a main character (she likes boys and doesn’t eat junk food…ok?) but the mystery with what happened at the party and who is behind the weekend is well plotted, if easy to figure out.
