Ok guys, this is a two for one deal! I ready the first book in this series a few years ago, and kinda lost track of the author. Thankfully Amazon remembered, and let me know when two more books in this world were available.
An Engineered Injustice is Book 2 in the Philadelphia Legal series. Like I said above, I didn’t even know it was a thing. Just as the first book centered around one of the lawyers in the group, this book centers around a different one. Vaughn Coburn is the lawyer we care about this time. His cousin is his client, and he’s on the hook for a fatal train derailment.
When Vaughn starts investigating the crash, he realizes that there are a lot of moving parts, and that he’s potentially / probably in over his head. Because Vaughn owes his cousin a debt (we don’t know why for a bit), he can’t say no, or leave him to someone else.
There are Philly politics, mob bosses, evil dudes, good guys doing bad things… I liked it. Some of the stuff at the end was a little cray cray, but all in all it was a good read.
We eventually do learn about the debt Vaughn owes his cousin, and it seems like everyone’s secrets come out. We meet a (soon to be) recurring character too!
A Killer’s Alibi is Book 3 of the Philadelphia Legal series. As of right now, it’s the last published book in the series. I think there’s another one coming out next year though. As long as I remember I will be reading it.
We start out with the recurring character I mentioned above – Jimmy Nunzio. He’s a crime boss, and he’s arrested for murder. Jimmy is a crime boss accused of killing his daughter’s boyfriend / rival mob boss’s son. We’re back to our original lawyer from the first book – Mick. He’s one of the partners, and a littttle bit shadier than Vaughn.
Unfortunately for Mick, his client won’t tell him what really happened the night of the murder, so Mick is basically winging it. We do eventually find out what happened, but it’s after the trial is over and the verdict was read. It actually turns out to be a good verdict for what actually happened.
There’s another story going on where Mick’s wife Piper is trying to free a woman in jail for killing her abusive father. We learn stuff along the way about the shady characters involved in that story too. It manages to be much more complicated than Piper ever thought it could be, and the end result has her shaken.
