I’d completely forgotten the title of this book, reading a Kindle, I am not always aware of the title of the book once I’ve started reading it. I’m really hoping it’s not just me that does that!! I genuinely have no idea why the book is titled Not So Nice Guy. Ian, the titular guy is never not nice. Ian and Sam (Samantha) meet at new teacher orientation at Oak Hill High School and have been best friends for three years. They have in the past had other boyfriends/girlfriends but more recently both are single and best friends, spending all their free time together. Sam is terrified that Ian will find out that she’s secretly in love with him, thus ruining their friendship.
A new teacher arrives and sees Ian in the staff room and asks Sam if Ian is available. She answers yes and this is overheard by a number of single teachers, which leads to open season on other teachers asking both of them out. Ian reacts jealously to others asking Sam out and steals and hides her valentines (possibly that might not make him a nice guy, but it’s all in a good cause).
Sam has tremendous anxiety regarding entering a relationship with Ian (she offers friends with benefits but Ian refuses), Ian is much more convinced that they have a Happy Ever After. Ian gives Sam time to work on her anxiety and the book follows a fairly set friends to lovers trope. It sounds like I didn’t like it, but I really did. I loved both Ian and Sam and the book is told in alternating points of view.
It’s a super quick, light read (264 pages). It’s a lovely palate cleanser between reading heavier or more dense books.
