Busy’s career has mostly flown under my radar. I was 11 when Freaks and Geeks premiered so I didn’t watch it until it came on Netflix years later; I’ve also never seen a single episode of Dawson’s Creek or Cougar Town, her other big roles. I had no idea she was on ER because I stopped watching around the time Grey’s Anatomy came out and that was before Busy had her arc. I essentially know Busy as “Michelle William’s best friend” which is probably not how she wants to be remembered.
One day, the whole cast was sitting around a table filming the Thanksgiving episode, and James looked at me and said, “See? You got lucky. Your show was cancelled after the first season.”’
She is very open and honest in her writing; she discusses having an abortion in high school, the drama surrounding her writing credit on Blades of Glory (which is not the hill I’d choose to die on..) and where she was with Heath Ledger died. Her Hollywood career has had more lows then highs but she has found a second career as an Instagram influencer of sorts- plus now she has written a book.
When reading memoirs it is always hard to silence your personal opinions on the decisions made by the author, who actually lived these decisions, especially when they make the opposite decision you would have made nearly every time. This Will Only Hurt a Little made me cringe and while I have a lot of sympathy for Busy about the lack luster direction of her career I wanted to strangle her during every essay involving a romantic partner. Busy has a terrible picker and a very slow romantic learning curve which is just infuriating, she has also made so poor real estate decisions. She writes numerous times that she wants to leave her husband and I don’t blame her! He is such an asshole but since he had a job when they met, something most of her other beaus did not, she decided he was a winner.
And Busy, when you are trying to position yourself as a “relateable celebrity” I would avoid discussing the hardships you faced when discovering your baby’s night nurse asleep at 3 am or how you were occasionally forced to use your housekeeper as a babysitter.
All in all this wasn’t a win for me.
