Long ago, I accepted my own propensity for being terrible at doing certain things “on time.” Especially if it has to do with sending mail or letters, holidays, birthdays, cards, and actually writing things down… I will probably drag my feet, get wrapped up in emotions, focus too much on perfectionism, and fail at accomplishing my postal-related goals.
Six Wakes was one of my beautiful, shiny, inspiring Xmas exchange gifts from MsWas. Guess who didn’t write a post when she got her box? Me. Shameful, terrible me. BUT, now that I am somewhat past my holiday-related block, I can say a heartfelt thanks to MsWas for such a darn good kickstart to my year of reading. I have felt mired in years worth of bad book luck and horrendous book recommendations. But I just knew… I knew I had to sign up for CBR 11, that it would initiate a glorious return to my truest love: reading. Reading like the dickens.
Six Wakes was the first book I read this year, as the New Year dawned and the celebrations slowed down. Mur Lafferty managed to catch my attention, despite some slight personal avoidance of mystery novels. However, as a giant fan of sci-fi, Six Wakes had so many of the best elements of my fave genre that I was easily drawn in. I know so many have already reviewed this book, so I will only say that it is story about clones in space… that plays out so perfectly, it felt like my favorite space-related movies. I think my absolute favourite thing about the book was the impeccably written characters. Each clone/person felt so fully formed, so human that each line of dialogue and choice of action for the characters felt realistic. I truly enjoyed this one; what an exciting way to start the New Year!
