cbr10bingo… Underrepresented
I really wish I liked the main character more. I picked this audiobook (in CD form) up from the library on a whim. The cover looked cool, and the story sounded interesting. I’m always up for a murder mystery with a dash of hidden identities.
The main character is Polly / Pauline. She starts out by abandoning her daughter and husband on their beach vacation and driving to Delaware. I don’t know if this was the point, but I didn’t like her right from the beginning. She seemed selfish, self-absorbed, and kinda bitchy. It appeared that she always got what she wanted, and she didn’t’ really care about anyone else. Those qualities don’t endear a person to me.
When we eventually get her backstory, it’s tragic, and I did feel more empathetic to her, but it was almost too little too late. The mystery of her didn’t do it for me, so I didn’t really care about her. I cared more about the two daughters she left behind, and the guy that got caught up in her wake. Her two husbands were crap – one was abusive, and the other was a bit of a wimp and mama’s boy. Adam was pretty good though. I feel like she finally got a great guy, and just wasted the opportunity.
Anyway, (ooh this anyway came late in my review!) I picked this as underrepresented, because the author is a woman. I know we’re probably getting more represented every day, but I think women are still underrepresented versus men in popularity / money / whatever in publishing!
