WOW!! This, for me, is pretty much a perfect book. The suspense and mystery were perfectly formed, maintained and amplified throughout this book. The style lent itself to the drama perfectly as well. This book has been written with the alternating chapters of the present with the past. With the present focusing on the group trapped in the elevator and the past focusing on one of the workers at the company.
This book is based around a group of four high power stock traders (think your Wolf of Wall street type) who meet for a compulsory Escape Room challenge which they work out really quickly is the lift that they become trapped in. There is a series of clues that they need to solve to “escape” the lift. These clues prompt them to think about their past and their actions. The alternating story line focuses on one of the ladies from the company and follows her journey through being employed and her changing lifestyle.
I absolutely loved this book. The characters are well developed enabling you move through a variety of emotions as you get to learn more about the four main characters from disgust, to sympathy, to revulsion and almost compassion.
I am not going to give anything away but I will say that the ending is very satisfying – which for me is an important criteria when reviewing a book. This story does not disappoint in any way, which is why I am giving it 5 stars. I am now looking forward to reading more of Megan Goldin’s books.
