Okay, so I am shamelessly reading and reviewing this before giving it as a gift. (I’m giving it to a 32-year-old man. Who cosplayed as Groot for ComicCon one year. So only the best for my friends!) (Update – he loved it!)
Our premise is that Baby Groot is trying to go to bed, but Rocket is having none of that nonsense. There are adventures to be had! The main story is told as a normal bedtime story with rhymes and all, but Rocket is interrupting with his adventuring. The first few pages have our normal Guardians crew, but other Marvel characters start creeping in. I’m sad to say I’m not really sure who all of them are. My comic book friends will shame me for lack of knowledge, I’m sure! I’m wondering of some of this is almost a preview for the upcoming movies? (Probably not, but you never know!)
This is perfect for the Groot fan of any age. There is a lot happening on every page with new things to discover on every read-through. There are some word bubbles on some of the pages, but most of the story is told through pictures. So you can decide what led to each page yourself, if you’re so inclined! I think it would be great to talk about each scene with a little one and try to come up with before and after with each page. The artwork is also fun, with a lot of attention to detail.
So, 5 out of 5 for this fun picture book featuring Baby Groot and friends!
