So this is the second book in the Joe Dillard series. I actually started with book one and moved on to book two! I think I’m getting the hang of reading now 🙂
I really liked the main character (Joe) in book one, so I’m going to keep reading until I don’t. He was a defense lawyer in book one, and he was burning out at the end. Now he’s a prosecutor. His very first case is a Satanic slaughter of a whole family. It’s pretty gruesome. We learn pretty quickly that there are two teen boys who committed the murder, but they were under the influence of a woman named Natasha who worships Satan.
I have to warn you all about the animals in peril in this book. There’s a dog who attacks someone and is brutally put down. I couldn’t read the details. I can’t say what I’d do in the same situation though. If a scary mean dog was attacking my nieces I’d probably freak out too. Anyway, there’s two more dogs that you’re not sure if they’re gonna be ok or not. That makes me nervous. There’s also one torture / killing of a cat, and another potential cat killing, but no details. I think I still would have read this book if I knew in advance, but I just want you guys to know.
So back to the story. Joe has to try and convict these two boys, while the real mastermind is out on the loose, because there’s no evidence against her. His family is in danger, his friends are in danger, and so is he. Joe needs to get Natasha off the street though, so she doesn’t strike again. I’d give this one 3.5 stars too.
