I read this book for a Bad Books Book Club so I will start by saying that it is pretty bad. It’s about a small resort town in Australia that is attacked by giant killer crabs. It’s the sequel to Night of the Crabs where a bunch of giant killer crabs attacked some people in Wales, I think. I haven’t actually read it. I guess it’s not really necessary to read book one to read book two!
This book is full of characters who are archetypes and not really memorable. There’s a guy on parole with a suitcase of money. There’s a hardened island resident who is the first person to discover the crabs and ends up being part of the crew sent out to push these terrible crabs away from the shores and back into the depth of the seas. Or maybe kill them? A character who is some sort of expert from the first killer crab attack in Wales comes out to help them with his knowledge of the crabs (which is not that much). Apparently they are hard to kill, got to hit them just in the right place to destroy them. Because their shells are hard, or something? And they are smart in addition to being menacing.
The most interesting character is this nymphomaniac who lives at the resort and ends up screwing most of the guys in the story. I think it’s a very 70s version of what a sexualized women would be like, but I think I found her nymphomania at least showing some interest and passion with something, even if it was about her screwing everyone in the book.
All told, this book was an entertaining read in a way and would probably make a good B movie. I don’t think it’s going to change anyone’s life, but it’s book number two in a series of seven, so maybe all the great life insights appear in the later books in the series.
