The List

The List by Siobhan Vivian

January 25, 2017 by Ealbrecht 1 Comment

Every year in September, at Mount Washington High School, a list is created listing eight girls, two from each grade. One girl in each grade is named the Prettiest, and the other is named the Ugliest. No one knows who creates the list. We begin with the morning the list is hung all around the school. Many freshman are unaware of what the list is. This list is always released at the beginning of Homecoming Week. The senior who is listed as the prettiest, is almost always awarded Homecoming Queen.

We see as each girl arrives at school and their reaction to being named as either the ugliest or the prettiest in their grade. They are all surprised by their placement on the list, whether they are prettiest or the ugliest.  Along with the list this year, is a small, one sentence comment about that girl and her placement on the list.

The girls have different experiences of being named on the list. Being named ugliest isn’t the worst thing that could happen for one girl, just how being named prettiest is horrible for another. One even embraces being named on the list, again, the senior who was named the ugliest in their grade for four years straight, a new record. The list creates new friendships and causes ripples in others. Girls on the list with boyfriends no longer have the same relationships they had prior to the list being posted.

Everyone is wondering, who created the list?
