The Variants are still the new top of the food chain. They’ve got people in their lairs / meat lockers. They keep the people alive so that their meat doesn’t spoil. They’re adapting even more than before. Some of them have gills, others feathers, and some developed camouflage.
The worst part though, is that they’re reproducing. There are now baby Variants, and they’re growing rapidly. Dr. Kate doesn’t know if they’re newest weapon will work on the babies…
Also, the president and vice president are eaten in this book. The secretary of state (who Beckham just happens to save) is sworn in as the new president.
So much happens in this book, it’s hard to remember it all. I guess the other scary thing that we find out is that there are “Alpha” Variants. They can kinda talk, and they can definitely tell their minions what to do. The two Alphas in this book are The White King & The Bone Collector. Both are supremely creepy, fast, and strong. They’re also protecting the baby Variants.
Two teams set out to capture a baby Variant, and of course it doesn’t go well. There are human collaborators in both GA and NY, which is really disappointing.
The last 30 minutes of the book had me reading in a frenzy. I couldn’t put the book down to go to sleep (and I love to go to sleep!). There’s an attack on Plum Island, and some of my favorite characters are affected.
Spoiler alert: the dog makes it!
