I didn’t really like Ms. Marcia’s writing style for the first part of this book. It was a little too conversational for me. The main character (Sam)’s best friend / assistant is named Michelle, but she calls her Michy. Her car is named Beulah. It just seemed like someone was trying too hard to make “fetch” happen.
About two thirds of the way through though, I realized that it totally fit the main character (Sam). The more I got to know her, the more I liked her. Sam’s a defense lawyer who weekly goes on talk radio shows. Her aforementioned BFF is from way back, & keeps her honest. Sam’s investigator is actually an ex-con, hacker, & former client. He’s pretty adorable, since he’s learning how to be an investigator from a how-to book. He ends up having good instincts though.
Her & her team really are good investigators, & she’s a good defense lawyer. They ride the thin line between good guy & sleaze very well. I liked all of the investigation into the multiple murders, & because this series is from the defense’s point of view (I guess I mostly read books from cop’s and prosecutor’s points of view), it’s totally different. Not everything is done by the book. The last chapter & the epilogue really surprised me. I can honestly sat that I wasn’t expecting it.
Like I said – in the beginning I wasn’t sure about the writing style or the characters. But after finishing this book, I went right to Amazon & pre-ordered the second book. I need to know what these guys do next!
