I got this book from the library, and I had to wait for like 15 people to read it and bring it back before I could get it. I totally understand now. I COULD NOT put this book down! I read it at lunch time while I was at work. Like to the point where I probably could’ve gotten fired because I couldn’t stop reading and get back to work.
Rachel rides the train everyday to work. Well, kinda to work (just read the book and figure out what I mean). She sees the same couple every day (through the window) that lives in one of the houses next to the train tracks. She nicknames them Jess and Jeff (I think Jeff? Definitely Jess, but I can’t guarantee Jeff). She mentally writes their whole love story, and thinks about them daily on the train. She’s going through some issues (including substance abuse, job stuff, ex husband stuff, and basically being homeless), so she’s really invested in their faux relationship.
One day she sees “Jess” with another guy at her house. Her whole dreamy ideal of them is shattered, and she’s sure that Jess is cheating on “Jeff”. That weekend, she ends up getting off at Jess and Jeff’s train stop. She then gets really drunk and something happens, but she can’t remember. She gets back on the train on Monday and finds out that Jess is missing. The rest of the story is Rachel inserting herself into the investigation, and trying to figure out wtf happened that weekend, and what happened to Jess (who is really Megan). We also hear the events leading up to Megan’s disappearance from her point of view. There’s a twist involving Rachel’s ex-husband and his new wife too. I don’t want to ruin anything, so just read it. I loved it.
