After the depressing, albeit fabulous, Inside the Obrien’s I opted for something light and fluffy next. Revenge Wears Prada is the sequel to Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada which was one of my most favorite books in high school; I’ve seen the movie a hundred times and was intrigued at what was probably an unnecessary sequel.
It is ten years after the events in Devil, Andy Sachs is on the verge of marry a media mogul heir as well as running a successful bridal magazine with her enemy turned bestie, Emily. On her wedding day Andy discovers her mother-in-law to be wrote her son, Max, a letter begging him to change his mind about Andy; she even mentions his recent reconnection with an old girlfriend as a sign. Despite her doubts Andy goes through with her wedding and is soon pregnant.
Her wedding is featured in the magazine and the continued success of her magazine, The Plunge catches the eye of publishing giant Elias-Clark. Unfortunately Andy and Emily’s former boss Miranda Priestly now controls a majority of the magazines Elias-Clark publishes. Miranda wants to purchase the Plunge and keep Andy & Emily in charge for at least a year. Even though Miranda feigns ignorance of their previous relationship Andy is worried she is buying their magazine to exact some sort of personal revenge of them for using her name to gain celebrity profiles (plus the whole leaving Paris in the middle of Fashion Week thing).
Nothing felt particularly high stakes in this one and the premise was even less believable than the first book. Lily and Alex are back in small cameos, but mostly Emily is Andy’s confidant which was a fun change. I don’t see this one hitting the big screen anytime soon- it just wasn’t fabulous enough.
