This book is number 6 in the Lucas Davenport Prey series. I liked it well enough. Unfortunately a dog gets killed (not graphically) at one point, and I have a really hard time with animals getting hurt or killed. I know it’s not real, and I have no problem reading about (most) people getting killed, but it stuck with me. Probably because I read in my bed or on the couch surrounded by my dogs. Anyway…
The major difference in Lucas in this book is that he was faithful to one woman! Weather came into his life in the last book (Winter Prey), and she stuck around after saving his life at the end of that book. She’s living with Lucas in Night Prey, and he doesn’t cheat on her, which is a big deal for Lucas. On to the killer – Koop. He’s another slightly/mostly off bad dude who takes his rage out on women. He finds women at book stores and preys on the shy/trying too hard/desperate ones that are eager to please. He does get obsessed with a businesswoman named Sara Jenson. He even carves her initials into the chests of the women he kills. He breaks into her apartment with a key and spies on her while she’s sleeping. It’s all very creepy.
I like the Prey books because you get alternating stories from the point of view of Lucas and also the killer. This one didn’t disappoint. The writing styles even change for the killer portions, so it feels like you’re inside his head. I like that, even if it does freak me out a bit.
