I’m determined to do this, get all the way through the Aimee Leduc Investigation books in a row. This is book 1o, and it starts out with Aimee romancing a new man, while Rene toils away at the office. She gets a call from him informing her that 100,000 francs have been wired into their account and he can’t trace where it’s coming from. A short time later, a woman enters the offices of Leduc Detective, wearing a motorcycle helmet just like Aimee’s and shoots Rene, leaving him for dead. When Aimee finds out she rushes to the hospital but soon learns she is the main suspect in his attack.
This story moved along at a pretty fast clip. It was interesting for her to be working without Rene’s help and expertise, but it wwas unsettling for Rene to actually suspect that it could have been her. As she always does, Aimee just won’t give up and she continues to defy pretty much all authority, looking good all the while. Though, really, Aimee, a shag haircut? I know it’s 1997 but really! While she is tracking Rene’s shooter, and encountering some dead bodies long the way, their new assistant Saj is trying to track down the mysterious deposit. It’s not long before she’s being investigated for laundering money, all the while connecting the shooting with an old case (from the first book Murder in the Marais). What a pickle. Naturally she does prevail and even miraculously survives an explosion from a gas leak, while trapped (with her dog, Miles Davis) on the roof of her apartment building. This chick seriously has nine lives.
