If anyone can come up with a better title feel free. It was much easier when the title was the name of the book!
I am assuming that anyone reading this review knows well of Harry Dresden as this is book 11, but I hate to be exclusive, so anyone reading this who doesn’t I shall nutshell it for you: PI Wizard working in modern-day chicago fighting many life and world threatening supernatural foes; wisecracking hero with big heart, think Indiana Jones has a child with Spencer that grows up magical!
In this installment of Dresden’s endlessly turbulent life ,Morgan, his previous Nemesis on the white council, turns up at his door all but dead having been wrongly accused of treason. So “facing the ultimate punishment, Morgan needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog, however much that someone isn’t interested. Soon, Harry is working to clear the less-than-agreeable Morgan’s name, hiding from the Council and bounty hunters alike and seeking the true turncoat. A single mistake may mean that heads – quite literally – could roll. And one of them might be his.”
And that, as ever, is just the bare bones of what happens! Dresden barely has time to turn around! There is an evil shape-shfting Native American spirit with deadly power, a dark Island, complex political intrigue, fraternal, parental and romantic love issues, musings on addiction and good verses evil in ourselves and the wider world and so much more.
What I like about Jim Butcher (and Harry Dresden who I continue to fall deeper in love with despite my general love preferences) is the humour and wit of the writing and how real and human Harry is in such an other worldly and often inhuman world.
If you have read the others then this series continues to delight so dive in with confidence. If you haven’t read any of these THEN WHAT ON EARTH HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WITH YOUR TIME?!
