Clash of destinies

Shaman's Crossing by Robin Hobb

Forest Mage by Robin Hobb

Renegade's Magic by Robin Hobb

November 10, 2020 by Merryn Leave a Comment

** Light spoilers for general plot direction of later books in the series ** Robin Hobb writes pain so well.  I remember reading Shaman’s Crossing and Forest Mage when they first came out and choosing not to buy Renegade’s Magic because I couldn’t face Nevarre’s life getting any worse.  This time around I stayed the course. Nevarre is the second son of a retired soldier who has been elevated to the nobility with a grant of land far from the capital.  This determines Nevarre’s future […]

I fell in love with this book a little.

Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders, #1) by Robin Hobb

September 15, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I will be honest, I went into this book with as open a mind as I could muster, but I did not really expect to like it that much. This is because I did not end up liking the Farseer Trilogy very much at all, for a variety of reasons (despite having rated the first book in that series four stars, which I should honestly revisit and lower). Ironically, I went into those books fully expecting to love them. But much to my surprise, and […]

So long and thanks for all the Fitz

July 11, 2017 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

I don’t know whether it was the fault of the book, or because I’ve read this entire series back-to-back and fatigue has set in, but Assassin’s Fate really dragged for me. It’s taken me a full three weeks to finish this one, whereas it’s predecessors were devoured within days – some of this was due to being back at work which is seriously impinging on my reading time, but mostly it was down to becoming bored with what felt like the same bloody conversation being […]

Get it together, Fitz

June 23, 2017 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

Fool’s Quest is the second book in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, having left Fool’s Assassin with Bee (and Shun) having been kidnapped by the Servants and a group of Chalcedean mercenaries. Here we catch up with Fitz….not hot on their heels, as he’s instead consumed by caring for the Fool, who’s been returned to him a broken man but one intent on having Fitz wreak vengeance upon those who harmed him. The Witmaster is on at Fitz to take a new partner, and […]

Fitz is a fool

June 19, 2017 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

I don’t often read 600 pages in a day, but when I do I’m sat by a pool in 85 degree heat and it’s a book starring FitzChivalry Farseer. An incredibly welcome return to the world of Fitz and the Fool (how I’ve missed them!) sees us catch up with Fitz – now Tom Badgerlock – decades after their last outings. Now in his sixties, even if he looks half that thanks to the super skill healing he received last time around, Tom has settled […]

I never thought I’d say this about a Robin Hobb book, but…

May 20, 2017 by TheShitWizard 3 Comments

Renegade’s Magic is the final, extremely disappointing book in Robin Hobb’s Soldier Son trilogy. It’s so wildly disappointing that it’s made me look back at its predecessors, which I had really enjoyed, and wonder if they were actually anywhere near as good as I’d thought they were. (Mild spoilers below)… Forest Mage left us with Nevare having finally cut all ties to his Gernian life. With the population of Gettys reeling in disgust at the crimes he’s accused of, Nevare uses his Speck magic to […]
