The wilds of high school social interactions

Komi Can't Communicate vol. 25 by Tomohito Oda

September 16, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 21: In the Wild Komi Can’t Communicate is set in high school (kind of the wilds) and Komi and her familiar group are separated in the beginning of their last year of high school, so Komi suddenly is faced with the challenge of taming a whole group of new friends (which is likely going to help her with her goal of making 200 friends since she’s only got a year left to do it). That and a good chunk of volume 25 is a […]

The value of female friends over boys wins for once

Komi Can't Communicate, vol. 17 by Tomohito Oda

May 14, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Komi Can’t Communicate is mostly a cozy manga series about high school kids and friendship. It’s reasonably predictable with no real disasters and some occasional comic moments. The protagonist Komi is the class beauty but she’s got social anxiety to the point where it’s difficult for her to speak to anyone in public, but this is taken by most people as ‘cool’. Tadano is the totally average guy who seems to understand Komi and decides to help her work on her anxiety and make friends. […]

Komi is Learning but What about Everyone Else?

Komi Can't Communicate, vol. 11 by Tomohito Oda

May 2, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

My kind of mindless yet entertaining read has recently been the Komi Can’t Communicate manga. The interesting thing is that until now, this series told as a bunch of loosely connected mini-episodes has so far managed to stay interesting. It took until volume eleven for things to get a little shaky. I still like Komi, and she’s making steady progress as a character. She actually speaks a few complete sentences to different people here, out loud. The romance angle is obvious and a little pointless […]

Komi Can Communicate, But Only Just Barely

Komi Can't Communicate, vol. 10 by Tomohito Oda

December 26, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So, Komi Can’t Communicate is one of those things that makes use of a lot of stereotypes and still mostly manages to be entertaining. It’s volume ten of the manga, and Komi actually gets to take the lead in some social interaction and making a new friend without Tadano or anyone else. There’s also a side story about her younger brother who’s apparently pretty similar to Komi in that he struggles to use words with other people, getting away with it on the basis of […]

Common High School Tropes But Stays Classy about Anxiety

Komi Can't Communicate, vols. 1-2 by Tomohito Oda

February 8, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

This is kind of a two-fer. I’ve seen some reviews or ads for Komi Can’t Communicate, so when I saw the first two volumes at a library, I felt I had to try them. The premise is actually a little interesting, which strikes me as a little unusual for a manga about high school kids in a non-fantasy setting. Tadano wants to get through high school without drawing attention. Komi is the school beauty queen. One would expect for them to connect because that’s just […]
