I’ve finally finished reading The Conflict of the Ages series. I’m ready to get back to reading the Bible itself for my evening devotion. While I am glad to have read a keystone series from our most prolific founding member in the Adventist faith, I’ve discovered that there’s nothing like the original source of faith itself to cement your faith. The Great Controversy is an odd mishmash of Reformation History, the Millerite movement and subsequent founding of the Adventist Church, and exegesis of the Book […]
A disappointing devotional read
My evening devotional project has consisted of reading Ellen G. White’s Conflict of the Ages series, since I have not read them all the way through, and they are considered landmark texts in the Adventist faith. The Acts of the Apostles is the fourth in the series and is one of the least cited or quoted from the series. I was personally interested to see what insights I could gain into the apostolic quests and whether or not this book lived up to the hype. […]
Having the same faith as the author does not guarantee you will love the book.
Last year, I began making my way through a series of books that have been instructional in my faith community and reading them during my devotional time. I didn’t find the first two books to be terribly exciting or innovative, but I was and am willing to make my way through the rest. It’s been rather interesting to read a series that people at church absolutely love and find myself not enthralled in the way they are. I am beginning to piece that apart. I […]
Another disappointing theological read.
I am continuing my quest to continue reading Ellen White’s Conflict of the Ages series. It’s been oft-quoted by people of my same faith, and I need to be in the know. So I’ve been working on this series for evening devotionals, and it’s been…an experience. Prophets and Kings, the second book in the series, focuses on the kings of Israel and Judah and the prophets who advised them during the great crises of God’s chosen people. White selectively hovers on certain episodes and skips […]
A denominational book of biblical importance that just didn’t grab me.
Every religion or denomination has prominent writers, thinkers, or church leaders that become a faith touchstone and keyword for the religion in question. As a Seventh-day Adventist, mine is Ellen White. She was a Methodist who became Adventist during the Millerite movement in the 1840s. Her ministry and influence helped solidify the Adventist Church as a denomination, and her writings have helped cement her continued influence even today. One of her most famous set of writings is her Conflict of the Ages series, which is […]
