Poetry in the Marrow: Throwing the Bones by catherine yronwode

Throwing the Bones: How to Foretell the Future with Bones, Shells, and Nuts by catherine yronwode

September 2, 2022 by Tava Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago, as I was cruising around online looking at Lenormand decks (the subject of another review), I saw someone describe themselves in their profile as “bonecaster”. Having spent many years among practitioners of non-mainstream faiths, I had seen the term before, but had pushed it aside. It sounded ghoulish and, quite frankly, intimidating. Like many Americans, I’ve always tried to think about death as little as possible. As I’ve aged, however, Death has come to visit more frequently, and I’ve begun discovering […]

One of the true highlights of my reading life, and now I can share it with my son!

Bone by Jeff Smith

December 31, 2021 by ingres77 6 Comments

Begun in 1991, Bone is a landmark comic book. Originally published as 55 comic books, the story was eventually gathered together in 9 graphic novels before eventually being bound in one massive 1,300 page volume in 2004. I started reading Bone in the mid-90s, and have read the entire story multiple times. It is one of my favorite books of all time. Earlier this year, my son and I started reading it, and he’s fallen in love with it just as I have. He’s six, […]

Not all I had hoped for, but there’s enough here to bring me back.

RASL (Vol. 1): The Drift by Jeff Smith

CBR11 Bingo: Illustrated It needs to be said (because I’ll take every opportunity I can to say it) that Bone is one of my favorite books, and I will never not recommend it to people. When I read comics as a teenager, it was one of the stand-out series being published at the time: creator owned, independently published, with all the writing and art done by one person. And it was beautiful. The writing was charming and endearing, and the art was ambitious, innovative, and […]

A Heavyweight Collection

September 24, 2018 by Tereasa Leave a Comment

I began reading comic books in the early nineties. There was no local comic shop in my tiny town, but I was able to use a mail-order service, and a few weeks later a package would arrive at home with my new issues, catalog, and if I was lucky a free promotional comic. One such time, I received a copy of Bone #1 (8th printing), and I was transported into the adventures of the Bone cousins. All those years ago I was able to read […]

Forget the stupid rat-creatures. Stupid and annoying Phoney Bone, more like it

July 9, 2016 by Malin 1 Comment

The three Bone cousins Fone Bone (renamed Hero Bone in my head), Smiley Bone (Comic Relief Bone) and Phoney Bone (Greedy, or frequently Insufferable, Bone) have been driven out of their home town of Boneville because Phoney Bone had some sort of get rich quick scheme and scammed the entire town, and now an angry mob has driven them off. They are wandering in the wilderness when they are attacked by a huge swarm of locusts and end up in a mysterious forest in a […]
