Regulatoooooooors…mount up!

February 10, 2014 by Return of Santitas 1 Comment

Do you think Stephen King was listening to this when he wrote The Regulators? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1plPyJdXKIY Sorry, I mean when “Richard Bachman” was writing it? I had a cold last weekend and spent three days laid out on the couch, unable to stand up for very long. On the Friday I marathoned the end of Orange is the New Black. On the Saturday my brain was working a bit better, so I dove into our ebook library. We’ve got this massive collection of ebooks that was […]

Kild-ahoy

February 10, 2014 by Return of Santitas Leave a Comment

I am a sucker for a nice looking book. Sightlines–the UK version, at least–features a flock of sea birds taking flight against a dark blue sky. It’s the same dark blue I see when I look up at the sky in the evening these days. Not quite full dark but a beautiful intermediary that conveys a promise of the dark and stars to come. You have to make yourself love the dark if you live in Scotland (or at least make an attempt) because in the […]

I get by with a little help from my friends

January 22, 2014 by Return of Santitas Leave a Comment

Full disclosure: Hend Hegazi rules, and I am friends with her. Big whoop, wanna fight about it? This is Hend’s first novel (I love writing “first” because I hope she corrals her kids in the hall closet long enough to write another one). Don’t expect me to be objective. It’s not happening. Normal Calm tells the story of Amina, who is the American child of Egyptian immigrants and a devout Muslim. The story begins as Amina starts college, and follows her as she negotiates the […]

This book is indeed quite heavy

January 22, 2014 by Return of Santitas 1 Comment

Allie Brosh can convey so much emotion in her drawings; they seem rudimentary at first glance, but just look at this: And this! She is amazing. I wanted to love this book; oh how I wanted to love it.

Never volunteer for medical testing.

I love me some Christopher Brookmyre. And every time I think I’ve read everything of his, something else pops up that I’ve missed.

Never get involved in a land war with Jack Reacher

January 10, 2014 by Return of Santitas 2 Comments

How did I discover the Jack Reacher series? I can’t even remember how it came into my life. The airport? A bus station? A friend? Perhaps a Cannonball Read recommendation? However it happened, I’m glad it did. These books are like crack to me. A couple months ago I recommended the series to my dad when he was going on a business trip. The next time we talked he expressed his very strong opinions about Mr. Reacher, something along the lines of “What a piece […]
