Bingo: Wealth One of the characters is very rich and it is central to the plot.
I’m going on a tear of mysteries/thrillers, and Endless Night is a banger. The main character Mike is a bit of a ne’er-do-well. He flits from job to job and does well with the ladies. He comes upon a dilapidated house in the country called The Towers. A Romani fortuneteller who lives near the property warns him the land and its house is cursed, but Mike pays her no mind.
Wandering the property, Mike runs into Ellie, a wealthy American heiress. They have a whirlwind romance and impulsively marry, much to Ellie’s family’s dismay, thinking Mike a gold digger. The fortune teller makes more appearances warning Ellie that the Towers—which she and Mike tear down to build a fabulous home on the land—is cursed.
I was 60% through the book and no suggestion of a crime had shown up, just tedious spookiness. But then the story takes an abrupt turn and before I knew it there was three murders in quick succession. The ending was fantastic and more than made up for the slow start. Highly recommend.
