I have to say, I am glad that I gave C.G. Drews another chance. I did not care for the first book that I read by them, Don’t Let The Forest In, and once I found out there was going to be another book in that series I went, well that’s a hard pass. But I saw a fellow friend/reviewer who loved this book so gave them another chance. I am glad I did. This was fantastic the whole way through. You get Gothic, you get Horror, you get Gore, and you get a slow reveal of mystery upon mystery. I also loved the ending.
You Did Nothing Wrong follows newly wedded Elodie and her son Jude, and her husband Bren. Elodie is from Australia and has packed up her whole life to follow Bren to America. Elodie is pregnant and is settling into her new home (or Bren’s old one) and is doing what she can to hide that her son Jude is not typical for a 6 year old and that she is worried that eventually Bren may see through her. When Jude begins to tell stories about how the house they are living in wants to eat them, Elodie is angry at Jude, but quickly starts to see and hear things too which makes her wonder if the house has plans for them.
It takes a while for the full story of Elodie to bloom, but when it does, it just pays off in dividends. I love a great haunted house mystery, but enjoyed how Drews flipped this slightly and throws enough mystery elements in there to keep things moving. It takes a while for readers to fully see Bren, but when you do, it’s good.
The overall plot of the book is good, probably because there are layers there that keep the flow of the book moving right along.
And the setting of the house, the town that Elodie now lives, and heck even her life in Australia are great backdrops to this whole story.
The ending was great.
