This was a fun, cute rom-com. Main character Delphie dies while eating a microwave burger. Shortly after arriving in a heaven-like place called Evermore, she meets and connects with a man, only to have him sent back to earth because he was just an “unconscious visitor.” She convinces her afterlife “therapist” to send her back and has 10 days to find the man and get him to kiss her, or she’ll return to Evermore for, well, evermore.
This wasn’t a groundbreaking book. If you’ve ever read or watched a romance before, you’ll realize by about 25-30% in what’s likely to happen. But it was an enjoyable read that did what romance books are supposed to do: give you a nice time. I liked the character of Delphie, who is grumpy and isolated, and I enjoyed meeting the cast of characters that she gets to know as she tries to chase down her mystery man, Jonah, especially librarian Aled. And of course I liked Cooper, the other man who enters Delphie’s life, initially as an aide to find Jonah. They snipe at each other, which I often enjoy in romantic pairings.
This is a relatively trope-heavy book. Even I, who can struggle to recognize tropes, picked up on several. But this didn’t detract from the book for me. There were some moments of humor that stood out, though this wasn’t quite the laugh-out-loud book I was hoping for. Overall, this is a solid entry in the romance genre, and I had a good time with it. 3.75 stars, rounded up.
