House witch Finlay Ashowan is pulled out of the kitchen—and into the fire—as war, family, and love collide in the third book of this fantasy romance series.
Having somehow convinced Lady Annika Jenoure to marry him, all Finlay Ashowan wants to do is settle down, cook some good meals, and enjoy a quiet life in Daxaria. But fate has different plans.
Fin’s father, Aidan Helmer, fire witch and servant of King Matthias of Troivack, has arrived in the kingdom with devastating news: Annika’s brother Charles has been taken prisoner, and the only way his life will be spared is if Annika or Fin goes to plead his case. Given that an attack from Troivack is imminent, there’s no way some trickery isn’t involved in this plot.
Now it’s up to Fin, with the help of his family, friends, and wily kitten familiar, Kraken, to attempt a daring mission of rescue and espionage. But he’ll need to move quickly—because if he can’t find a way to fend off his father and keep Daxaria safe, all his dreams might go up in flames.
Poor Fin just wanted to cook! But now he’s in high counsel war strategy meetings because his estranged abusive father is the war leader of a rival nation on its way to attack. Thank god he has Kraken. No seriously. Kraken is load-bearing to the survival of like….everyone in this book. I love that damn cat.
I will provide no context for this quote.
“While some familiars are mirrors of their witches, others are strong where their masters are weak. You are the Ruler of Homes. You bring peace, and much more. I am war, chaos, and seductively fluffy. Together, my witch, we are unstoppable.” Kraken
This is probably the most serious in tone of the trilogy, what with the abusive father and war and all, but it is also supremely satisfying and wraps up nicely. Also, never let Fin cook and chill with a group of people. I don’t care if they are hostile enemy soldiers while he’s a hostage. He WILL end up making them all his best friends. No one is safe. The man is somehow an annoying grump while also rolling nat 20 on charisma when he decides to make an effort.
This is the last book focusing on Fin. The next one follows an adult Princess Alina, and then Fin’s daughter gets a trilogy of her own. Delemhach is currently on book two of Fin’s son’s series as well.
