First book of the year! This is a volume of short stories set in the same wizarding school for anthropomorphic animals (The Wizdom’s School of Wizarding). A long time ago, a wizard gave animals “the shape and intellect of a human,” creating demi-humans who now go to this wizarding school. The stories are all BL themed, although some of them just have a heavily flirty atmosphere or touch upon homoerotic themes instead of all of the characters ending up in romantic relationships.
I enjoyed the art here and the overall atmosphere, as I am a sucker for a story set in a school. I also liked the author’s afterward and the insight into the thoughts behind the work. The way they discussed wanting more people to become furries was funny to me. The short strips showing other funny moments from the longer stories were also a nice little treat. The last two stories were my favorites, with their themes of relying on others for help and being vulnerable. There were some good delicate moments of comfort that were nicely done. I did wish that some of the stories were fleshed out more, and I found some of the themes of teacher/student relationships and power dynamics within relationships in general to verge on the uncomfortable. The relationship was shown in its beginning stages but I wasn’t sure if were were supposed to be rooting for the teacher and student to get together (which they shouldn’t!). This volume felt light overall to me and I don’t know if I’d be seeking out the author’s other work.
Warnings for: blood, coercive control within a relationship, teacher/underage looking student relationship with overtones of romance
