Normally I avoid books like Mini Habits for Weight Loss like the plague. I had an eating disorder many years ago and dieting is an anathema to me. However, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney disease recently and have to change my lifestyle in an attempt to stop further deterioration. It’s a tricky spot. Luckily I like all kinds of food and I can cook, so that will help. But there’s no getting around that it would help to lose some weight and increase some healthy habits. I refuse to jeopardize my mental health for extremes, but I don’t want to end up on dialysis in the future if I can improve things a bit.
I’m pretty impressed with the simplicity, humor, and modesty of this book. Guise emphasizes over and over that small, easy steps to change are the way to go. Like literally one push up can be a goal. He doesn’t pretend we don’t have to think a bit about our choices, but that deprivation and unrealistic goals are not the way to go. Yes, this is still a self help change book, but he does seem to walk the talk about how to conceptualize change in humane and achievable ways.
I feel a bit overwhelmed with my new diagnosis, but this cheerful little book seems to have its heart in the right place. In that spirit, I am off to drink an extra ounce of water. Baby steps!
