I kept eyeing this at Barnes and Noble because I thought the cover art was nice, and I finally gave in and got the two volumes. The nice thing here is that the story is complete in two volumes, so it’s not a huge money or time investment. The con is that it’s only two volumes, so the plot is a little rushed and I wish we could have spent more time in this world. The author has a lot of interesting ideas about Limbo and the whole system of penance that I would have liked to see fleshed out more. I also thought there would potentially have BDSM because of the chain situation on the front cover, but this is actually pretty fluffy overall. Each volume has one explicit sex scene at the end of the book as an epilogue. The rest of taken up with the kind of convoluted plot.
Love in Limbo follows Calen, a former soldier who dies and is sent to Limbo for penance. Limbo is a series of floating islands that are completely separate from each other, so people have to stay in their little town island until they’ve done enough penance to be reincarnated. Calen shows up with no memory and is told that he is going to be a Reaper, whose job is to protect the town from monsters who occasionally come by and try to destroy everything. The person showing him the ropes, Makoto, is a very sweet guy and also a golem made from clay holding a soul. Another chunk of the plot is exploring why and how Makoto’s soul ended up in this clay body. The main thrust of the story is their falling in love with each other and Calen discovering how this world works in terms of why they’re there and what they’re supposed to do as penance. The characterization of the angels and the whole heavenly cosmology was a fun take on it, with a dark undercurrent that I liked. The art was solid and expressive. Overall, I thought this was fun and engaging, and I was glad I finally took the plunge and bough this.
