CBR Bingo – History
I don’t read a lot of horror but I do enjoy it from time to time; however, I’m jumpy by nature so I’ve got to be careful with what I read lest I freak myself out and make it even easier for my teen to achieve a satisfying jump scare. I wanted something good and juicy for October so asked friends who are big scary book fiends and they DELIVERED. This is my first Sager but likely not my last as I found his book to be a can’t-put-down thriller.
In this Lizzie Borden-esque tale, a caretaker with secrets of her own is hired to look after Lenora Hope, in her 80s and bedridden and accused of the bloody murder of her mother, faster, and sister. She lives in their mansion, which has seen better days and is situated on the edge of a cliff. Gothic TO THE MAX. Their family history tells a sad story of a daughter pushed to madness, but all is not what it seems.
This book didn’t go where I thought it was going to at ALL, but I buckled in for the ride. It was TWISTS on TWISTS on TWISTS with M. Night Shamalan TWISTS around many dark and creaking corners.
I often get frustrated with last-act book reveals, but these were so well done, and so surprising, that I was delighted with each and every one. Not to mention she had some clever AHA moments sprinkled throughout. If you’re looking for a gripping tale with a bit of a bump in the night, look no further.
Also, I would be grievously mistaken if I didn’t mention the absolutely gorgeous cover that set the tone for this creepy book. Two excited thumbs up on that front.
