I have spent the better part of a month trying to write this review. I really really really wanted to love this book. For the first seventy-five percent, I was really into the mystery and the characters, but the last quarter of this book goes completely off the rails. To the point that it makes me dislike the rest of the book.
Devon is a student at the prestigious Niveus Academy. However, he is one of only two black students and is also a scholarship student from an impoverished neighborhood. He is obsessed with music and is working hard to get into Julliard. Chiamaka is the other black student, but she comes from a wealthy family. She is the most popular girl in school and is frequently compared to Regina George and Blair Waldorf. Each of them has secrets they want to remain hidden, but an unknown entity called Aces starts texting incriminating pictures to the rest of the student body.
This book has been described as Get Out mixed with Gossip Girl. I disagree. Get Out was fairly subtle in how it looked at racism and classism. This book was as subtle as a brick to the face. As I said before, the ending is completely ridiculous and impractical.
