CBR14Bingo: Font (I always really like Chmakova’s handwritten font.)
Enemies is the fourth in Svetlana Chmakova’s Berrybrook Middle School series, which I love. I’ve been waiting a few years for the most recent installment and this lived up to my hopes. Felicity lives in the shadow of her little sister Letty, who is always winning science fairs and getting recognition for her academic achievement. In the beginning of the book, Letty teases Felicity that she never finishes anything, and so Felicity sets out to win the “Pitch the Future” entrepreneur contest and show that she can finish and win something. She also has tension with her former friend Jo, and her efforts to figure out why he seems to hate her now are the other main thrust of the book.
Out of the four books in the series, Brave and Crush are still my favorites, but I enjoyed this one a lot. Chmakova is able to really capture the inner world of her characters, and to show how open communication and honest apologies can move relationships forward. I liked that her characters talked to each other and how Felicity’s parents were supportive and caring. It was also really nice to see two adult nonbinary characters. I did think that this one seemed a bit more packed than the other books between the competition, friendship tension, sibling tension, and crushes, but it never got confusing or felt like one thread got lost. Overall, a great addition to the series and one I’m happy to add to my bookcase.
