The dangers of not doing research before traveling abroad

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

October 10, 2020 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I can’t even with these boys. These BOYS!  They can’t seem to use their words with each other.  Baz can be smooth as hell when he wants to, but he and Simon have a verbal block between them, and I can’t even.  I want to smack them both upside the head, or give them a truth serum or something.  They need to talk about their FEELINGS and they just WON’T!

Anyway, we’re in America now, and on a road trip!  Simon, Penny, and Baz are on their way to California to surprise Agatha with a visit.  (Because if they had asked her if she wanted them to come, she would have said no.)  But nothing goes to plan, because of course not.  Many, many things go wrong.  Partly because they knew how to navigate their own world back home, but America is a whole different ballpark.

But we have a lot of cool American lore and world building happening!  There seem to be a lot more magical creatures, or at least there are more here because there’s more space.  There’s a whole different attitude about mages and magic, at least with the people the gang encounters.  Mages don’t gather here, they tend to be loners, so that leaves room for other things to take their place.  Things like dragons, and sasquatches, and water sprites, and werecreatures, and a different kind of vampire.  Rowell has opened up the world to a whole lot of new possibilities.

Honestly, if things hadn’t gone to shit, I think Baz and Simon would be happy in America.  And who knows, they may end up there in the future.  And there will be a future – there’s a third book in the works, Any Way the Wind Blows!

This fulfills the CBR12 Bingo square of “Yellow”
