Picard: Counting down to the series

Picard: Countdown by Kirsten Beyer & Mike Johnson

Cover of Star Trek graphic novel showing Jean Luc PicardThis was a 3 part comic series published as a graphic novel covering the events that lead up to the latest Star Trek Series Picard. Generally speaking I’d recommend reading this first if you haven’t seen Picard and want to as it’ll provide some detail and context that takes more effort with the show.

It covers events that lead up to the Kelvinverse Star Trek movies as well as it focuses on the risk of Romulus’s sun going nova and Picard is leading the mission to help save people from the system and get them to safety. This runs into issues as there is suspicion and doubt on both sides – with the Romulans and Federation clearly not trusting each other. In particular the Romulan security service the Tal Shiar take advantage of this to lure Picard into a trap that results in Picard receiving help from an unexpected source.

This introduces characters who are important to Picard – Raffi Musiker is his first officer, and his Romulan staff Laris and Zhaban play key roles – this helps provide context for why Picard trusts them. The story itself also helps outline why things have gone bad and why Picard can’t bring himself to trust people as much.

It’s a quick read that tells a story concisely and well. The art style is clear and consistent – it’s important for me that recognisable characters like Picard are recognisable so that’s a win. It’s a worthwhile read for Star Trek fans who like Picard, but not essential to enjoy the series.
