Our Cannonballers love a chance to express their opinions, and therefore we will be reading The Devourers by Indra Das for our Fantasy Book Club meeting on March 8, 2017.
This time it was a neck and neck race between The Devourers and All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders, but about halfway through the voting period Das’ novel took the lead (for those that are curious, His Majesty’s Dragon, Steelheart, and Roses and Rot rounded out the voting, but all were distant to the first two). While I always want as many people to read our selections as possible, I also hope that if your vote wasn’t our final choice, that you’ll make the time to read both at some point during Cannonball Read 9. I’ll be posting a Discussion Topics post two weeks before our discussion as a reminder to finish up and food for thought. As in Book Clubs past, feel free to visit us here on the group blog for the dedicated post or in our Facebook Cannonball Read Book Chat group where I’ll have even more topics to discuss.
As a reminder, here’s a synopsis of our award winning choice:
The Devourers by Indra Das
- On a cool evening in Kolkata, India, beneath a full moon, as the whirling rhythms of traveling musicians fill the night, college professor Alok encounters a mysterious stranger with a bizarre confession and an extraordinary story. Tantalized by the man’s unfinished tale, Alok will do anything to hear its completion. So Alok agrees, at the stranger’s behest, to transcribe a collection of battered notebooks, weathered parchments, and once-living skins. From these documents spills the chronicle of a race of people at once more than human yet kin to beasts, ruled by instincts and desires blood-deep and ages-old. The tale features a rough wanderer in seventeenth-century Mughal India who finds himself irrevocably drawn to a defiant woman—and destined to be torn asunder by two clashing worlds. With every passing chapter of beauty and brutality, Alok’s interest in the stranger grows and evolves into something darker and more urgent.
And don’t forget, you can also always look through the Fantasy category for more suggestions. Find out what books we discussed in the past and watch for info on upcoming titles on our Book Club page.
