I mean, this book has love triangles, ghosts calling from beyond the grave, obsession, murder, even a Nice Guy (TM)! It’s not high literature, but it was fun. Its sincerity even got me hooked into caring about the characters, instead of the detached irony I was originally reading with.
Isa was sent to live with her cousin, Alette, in South Africa. Where Isa was shy and introverted, Alette was talkative and charming. Growing up, they managed to lucid dream together, until Isa grew too scared of Alette’s preoccupation with the pyschic realm and the occult. Isa settled into life as an architect in South Africa while Alette moved to London to become a psychic to the upper class. Alette also married a man that doted on her. In short, Alette’s life was great, while Isa had an affair with a married man for decades.
Then Alette dies and her will, with its odd requests, summons Isa to London. Isa then learns Alette had left her perfect husband, who turned out to be not so perfect. Alette’s will gives detailed instructions to Isa on how to dismantled the ex-husband’s business empire. Isa begins to slip into the life that Alette left behind, where unconsciously or due to some ghostly interference from Alette, and soon Isa might disappear completely to let Alette make into the world.
