Maybe someday…

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro

May 4, 2015 by chatelaine 1 Comment

I am WAY in the minority with this one, I know, but it is not for me. I hesitated before writing anything about it, because I didn’t even finish it. I was fairly involved for about 50 pages, less so for maybe 50 more, and finally gave up about 3/4 in when I realized not only did I not care what happened, but also didn’t even find it particularly interesting.

Probably, if I owned this, it would sit on the nightstand for a few weeks, or longer, and then one magical day I’d pick it up and the time would be right. That’s what happened with Atonement, which in the end I loved, among several others. But this one, it was on hold at the library, so perhaps I will never know.

It’s disappointing, because I really looked forward to it, and because on paper (I made a funny!) it sounds marvelous. But, the murkiness and uncertainty of the memory fog just became, boring, honestly. Just not the right time for me, I guess.  Over & out.

exasperated mom of teenager, haphazard housekeeper, decent bartender I've allowed reading, once my favorite of all activities, to fall by the wayside in favor of much less enjoyable pursuits. CBR helped me with that once before, plus, y'all are an endless source of fantastic recommendations. 2019 update: So I'm reading more but my CB10 participation was abysmal. It might happen this year. It might not.

I don’t actually think you are in the minority. Pretty much everyone I know has been disappointed with this book, and these are mostly people who love Ishiguro’s writing.
