Just hopping on the bandwagon like everyone else! And after Redeployment I needed something a little silly to cleanse the palate. Enter my library getting this in for me at just the perfect time!
As a lover of many pieces of classic literature, especially Jane Eyre (but not in the romantic way, because ew), parts of this were completely right up my alley. I was sending pictures of the book for my sister and I to cackle about like we were crazy witches (which we kind of are). My favorites overall were probably the continuing tales of Hamlet and Daisy Miller. Both just seemed to match so perfectly with the tone that if they existed today they would sound exactly as she writes. I also (as a child of the late 80s/early 90s and with an older sister) loved the Sweet Valley High and Babysitters Club ones. Just so true!
So why not five stars? Well, I didn’t love most of her author (instead of character) ones. Except Thoreau, because that was spot on. But overall all of the authors sounded very much the same. I mean, yes, lots of authors were crazy, agoraphobic, and verbose, but if you read a bunch in a row the voices all blended. All that separated them was when she would mention that one famous detail from their stories. It’s very hard to find a unique voice for one character, let alone the many she’s using in this book, but the authors in general felt like a miss.
Overall, if you love literature, go spend an hour or two laughing. There’s bound to be something in here you’ve read and hopefully it’ll make you giggle.
