Embarking on a 13 hour car trip I asked a friend for a suggestion for an audiobook. The words “xkcd” and “Wil Wheaton” were barely out of his mouth when I started to download it from my local libraries collection. And I was not disappointed.
xkcd is “A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language” so clearly probably a hit with this audience. There is a “What If” section where readers can ask questions and, as the title suggests, Randall Munroe will possibly choose one to answer quite scientifically. He covers everything from the plausibility of soulmates to if it is possible to blot out the moon if everyone on earth was pointing a laser toward it. The book is a collection of these questions and answers, as well as some very weird questions peppered periodically between the chapters, sans answers, for giggles.
My brain is not so science-minded, so this isn’t something I would naturally pick up, and would probably be tough for me to read. In audiobook format I was able to get the gist and also pause periodically to have my science-minded (and hunky) bf explain things about rockets, fusion, etc. It was a great road trip book, 4 thumbs up. And did I mentioned narrated by Wil freaking Wheaton? That is the nerd cherry on top of the nerd sundae.
The only downside to the audiobook is that the book is peppered with comics, so you miss out on that, but I would recommend this book in any format.
