Time and Free Will – 5/5 I am not a philosopher or even particularly well-read in philosophy, so this review is more from the perspective of someone with a literature background, and who is used to using philosophy to serve the aims of literature and philology. This book is particularly suited to the task because through early breakthroughs (or perhaps just ideologies) in psychology — specifically he references William James (and it’s possible he mentions Freud, but I don’t recall it specifically) — to better […]

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

March 5, 2022 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

I’ve had The Handmaid’s Tale on my shelf for many months now, but I’ve been avoiding starting it. I wanted to read it, but I felt like I had to be in a certain (untroubled) emotional state to face it, and that’s been a tall order these past couple of years. I recently braced myself and got down to business. Of course I already knew the premise: In the near-future, after the U.S. government has been overthrown and replaced by a patriarchal, Cristhian theonomy, women […]

“Suddenly revenge is so close he can actually taste it. It tastes like steak, rare.”

Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood

I actually really enjoyed this retelling of The Tempest*, particularly since I had just re-read the play as a refresher, so it was a lot easier to catch all the references and parallels. This is actually only my third Margaret Atwood book, which feels weird, since she is everywhere, and also because I’ve read The Handmaid’s Tale three times. About time I branched out! (I’m sorry, Malin, I still haven’t read The Blind Assassin, which is a book I know you love.) *Thanks to andtheIToldYouSos […]

It was the ring of counterfeit Elvis robots that did it for me, honestly.

The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood

September 13, 2021 by chelz.hawk Leave a Comment

“He can’t shake the feeling that this place is some sort of pyramid scheme, and that those who fail to understand that will be left empty-handed. But there’s no obvious reason for this feeling of his. Maybe he’s ungrateful by nature.” The nation is in economic ruin. Everyone is fighting for whatever scraps are left. Which is why Charmaine is grateful to have a job as a bartender, even if she and her husband Stan are living in their car and moving every few hours […]

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood

June 2, 2021 by Rooooomie 1 Comment

When I was a kid, I was deep into Greek and Roman mythology. That interest stayed with me during Greek and Latin classes in high school, but once I was lured into the traps of modern literary fiction, I never really looked back. Recently, a slew of retellings of famous mythological stories started coming out, including some that tell these stories from new points of view. (I will read you eventually, Circe.) I’m not sure why I decided to pick up The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, […]

On Writers and Writing – Margaret Atwood (2002)

On Writers and Writing by Margaret Atwood

March 11, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This book began, we’re explained, as a series of lectures in England about the nature of writing. Atwood approaches this subject with some playfulness and hesitancy, but ultimately divides her talks into some distinct categories and topics: “Orientation: Who Do you think you are?”; “Duplicity: The jekyll hand, the hyde hand, and the slippery double”; “Dedication: The Great God Pen”; “Temptation: Prospero, the Wizard of Oz, Mephisto &co”; “Communion: Nobody to Nobody”; and “Descent: Negotiating with the Dead”. From these topics she is able to […]
