A Memoir of a Hong Kong Childhood

Golden Boy: A Memoir of a Hong Kong Childhood by Martin Booth

January 13, 2020 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I can’t remember why I picked this book up, but it was a lovely read.  This is a charming book about the childhood memories of Martin Booth, who, in the early 1950s, moved with his parents to Hong Kong, where his father was posted with the British Navy.  With an open-minded mother and “lucky” golden hair, 7-year-old Martin explored Hong Kong, including the parts of the city usually walled off to “gweilo” (foreigners.)  The book includes lovely and loving descriptions of the city and the […]

I loved it and I hated it. But I loved it just a little bit more.

Not too long ago, narfna posted a review of Golden Boy that immediately sent me to my library’s website, reserving the book. Golden Boy is about Max, an intersex teenager in present day England. When Max is taken advantage of by a childhood friend, he begins to question who he is and what intersexuality actually means for him. In addition, his parents, both trying to do the best for Max, weigh in with opposing opinions. There’s also Max’s love […]

“The worst thing in the world is a secret.”

HOLY SHIT, Y’ALL. Sending out the Bat Signal. This is a book you should read probably as soon as possible. I can’t believe it took me almost nine months to hear about this book, and I only heard about it then because a particularly prolific book blogger I follow on Goodreads received a free review copy of the audiobook, and also gave it five stars. She also had not heard of it before, even though it had been published last May. This is a travesty. […]
