Watch out Scooby Gang, there’s a new team in town

Goldie Vance The Hotel Whodunit by Lilliam Rivera

Goldie Vance volume 1 by Hope Larson

December 12, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read the Goldie Vance novel, The Hotel Whodunit, before the graphic novel Goldie Vance volume 1 (though based on the comics) because the novel was due before the graphic novel at the library. However, I do not think I would have liked or disliked any differently if I had read in reverse. Both stories are a combination of Nancy Drew, Harriet the Spy and (from what I understand), Veronica Mars. I also got a bit of Archie Comics, along with a dash of the […]

Excuse me while I go watch FURY ROAD for the fiftieth time.

Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road by Kyle Buchanan

November 28, 2022 by narfna 9 Comments

If you like Mad Max: Fury Road, you should read this book. If you are interested in the process of creating art, and filmmaking, you should read this book! If you like a little tea (but not so much that it drowns you) with your behind the scenes info, read this book! It’s really good! Also, it is fairly mind-blowing the amount of work and perseverance that went into the creation of the movie. It’s a miracle (or several) that it even got made. It’s […]

It wouldn’t be CBR Bingo without me frantically catching up on everything I read but was too distracted to write about, now would it? Square: Cold – Fool Moon – DNF This is it, folks- my first DNF in YEARS! I just couldn’t do it. I started this book way back in JANUARY, and despite multiple formats and multiple tries, I just can’t do it. I know there’s a mythical “it gets better” carrot hanging out past the fourth entry, but I just don’t have […]

You've Got Red On You: How Shaun of the Dead Was Brought to Life by Clark Collis

April 12, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m not a horror movie fan in general (I don’t like being scared, nothing fun about it for me) but I love Shaun of the Dead. Maybe it’s because it has a “happy” ending, or maybe just because it’s funny, or maybe because the main focus aren’t the zombies, but Shaun’s emotional arc, and the jokes of course. Whatever the reason, it’s great. When I was listening to Screen Drafts last year they were doing an episode about zombies, and author Clark Collis was on […]

“Some werewolves are hairy on the inside.”

Danse Macabre by Stephen King

July 29, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was good, but it is very dated. He focuses on horror in the thirty year period of the 1950’s to the 1980’s, although he does have a foreword to the latest edition where he brings up more modern movies, but that’s only about thirty pages, and the rest of the 400 pages are still focused on horror that was all released before I was born (and I’ve never liked it enough to seek any of it out). It’s also less interesting to me personally […]
