The Suffragette Scandal is the book six in Milan’s Brothers Sinister series, of which I have read none of the previous volumes. The nice thing about romance series is that you can jump in and out of the series without loosing any context. I suspect there was a scene or two that would have been more enjoyable if I’d read the other novels, but I understood this one just fine. All in all, it’s an excellent romance novel and I enjoyed most of it. I think it went on just a bit too long in some spots, and it might […]

Book Club by faintingviolet
We’re going to do Book Club again this year, and with a little more formality than last year’s when I just needed all of you to read Station Eleven RIGHT NOW and come talk to me about it. We’re starting with Romance, but other Book Club Reads will be Sci-fi, Young Adult, and Classics with film adaptations in June, September, and December respectively. I’ve decided to start with a genre that is comfortable for me. For those of you who consider yourself romance readers, hopefully there’s something here that strikes your fancy and for those of you who aren’t normally romance […]
A new year, an old friend of a book.
A Kiss for Midwinter by Courtney Milan
I had promised myself a reread of A Kiss for Midwinter this Christmas, however I didn’t get to it until this weekend, but that doesn’t matter since its a very quick read. It is Mrs. Julien’s favorite novella, possibly of all time, and one that I really enjoyed, but always felt like I was missing something. I think I’m still missing something, but this is definitely a 4.5 star book for me, and proves that Milan is fantastic at novellas (not that I didn’t already know that). Quickly, A Kiss for Midwinter is the story of Dr. Jonas Grantham and […]
Those Harkness Dorms Sound Fantastic
The Shameless Hour (The Ivy Years #4) by Sarina Bowen
In trying to review this book I now know why some of you wait to review these series in one fell swoop instead of individually. In praising this effort from Bowen I find myself tempted to just repeat myself from previous reviews. In the fourth book in the series, Sarina Bowen has found her sweet spot and is continuing to write feminist bent romance and in many ways appears to be gunning to be the Courtney Milan of the contemporary new adult genre (as much as I love Milan, I was disappointed in her effort in this genre, Trade Me […]
A Romance where the secondary plot trumps the main one!
The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan
So this is the second novel in the Brothers Sinister series, but fourth story overall. Thus far the two novellas have been perfection (and every romance reader and author should read and take note), but both novels haven’t done it for me yet. And that includes you, The Heiress Effect. This time we have Jane, an heiress of undistinguished birth, and Oliver Marshall, bastard brother of the Duke of Clermont. Jane comes off as loud, brash and uncouth, but has so much money that no one can ignore her. Oliver is an up and coming politician who is trying to get […]
“I thought he was a centipede. Where did he get tentacles?” “The tentacle store. Stop interrupting.”
Trade Me by Courtney Milan
Once again, I’m one of the last ones to jump on the Courtney Milan bandwagon. Last year, Milan was an author I had never heard of, writing books in a genre that I knew nothing about. And then I followed the advice of my fellow Cannonballers and read her Brothers Sinister series — and I really liked them. Milan was a good writer who really appreciated history and strong women. This year, the buzz was all about Milan’s entry into the contemporary, New Adult genre, and her first book in a proposed trilogy, Trade Me. Trade Me is about Blake, a billionaire […]
In which I return from a lengthy vacation and dive head-first in to the New Adult genre.
The Year We Fell Down, The Year We Hid Away, Blonde Date, The Understatement of the Year, The Shameless Hour by Sarina Bowen
I’ve been away for a month on a lovely vacation. Mountains, beach, Boston, family, and 10 great books. And now I’m back to reality. Laundry, unpacking, back to school shopping, and book reviews. I’m not sure I can take it. Because I read a 5-book (well, actually, 4 novels and one novella) series, I’m going to start my reviews there. Even though they were the last books I read, and the freshest in my mind, and I should probably try and remember what happened in those books I read back at the beginning of July. But no. I’ll write about the […]
A historical romance novella and the first Milan that I’ve loved!
The Governess Affair by Courtney Milan
And I finally get what all of my fellow “ballers” are talking about when they talk about Milan. This amazing little novella is full of wit, life, some very real darkness, but overall a wonderful triumph and a happy ever after I can get behind! This is a prequel to the Brothers Sinister series. It tells the story of former governess, Serena, and the Duke of Clermont’s “man of affairs”, Hugo. Serena spends every day sitting outside the Duke of Clermont’s residence saying nothing, while he tells Hugo to get rid of her. As they begin to talk over the […]
