Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

June 30, 2022 by jormis 1 Comment

All good things come to an end.  Reviewing Northanger Abbey finalizes my happy stint as the chair of the Jane Austen Book Club. While Northanger Abbey was Jane Austen’s first completed novel in 1803, it was only published posthumously together with Persuasion in 1817. The book follows 12 months in the life of 17-year-old Miss Catharine Morland who lives in a happy family with comfortable means (her father is a country clergyman). Catharine is naive as befits young ladies of her age. She likes reading […]

The older you get, the closer history seems

Ancestor Trouble by Maud Newton

June 7, 2022 by booktrovert 2 Comments

For the past few years, when asked about what makes me want to teach, I have given an answer that includes, in some form, the concept of being a good ancestor. This is a fantasy series that focuses on a different story and characters each novel. Some characters may cross over and be the main for more than one but the situation would be drastically different. I absolutely love this way of storytelling and think it allows for fresh and fun ideas, vastly different aspects of a fantasy world, and new and fun romances almost every story (if you are into that kind of thing!). Here are my reviews for each individual novel which star rating […]

Fine, I’ll Say It

Peace Talks by Jim Butcher

March 8, 2022 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

I got Peace Talks by Jim Butcher out of the library. I’m not sure they have Battle Ground, I guess I should check. I was…underwhelmed. I’m starting to think that Jim Butcher can’t write/doesn’t know what to do with his female characters. Everyone wants Harry, Harry wants everyone, except Justine, because she’s off limits.  He can’t even act like a normal dude about Butters’ consensual poly relationship.  And yes, I’m glad he and Karrin Murphy finally traded I love yous, but he couldn’t get it […]
