One word: WOW. That is all. Need more? This book has gotten a lot of press. I was afraid it would be preachy or sappy. It is not. Yes, there is emotion. But it is not forcing you to feel a particular emotion. The author just wants to tell a story. While based on his own experiences, it is fiction. The afterwards from the author and illustrator (more on her later) elaborate on the historical context. I know some of it, but as I was […]
Be Prepared
Vera is a typical pre-teen girl: all she wants to fit in with her American friends. But she is just “the poor Russian kid” and different. Her parents are divorced, she cannot afford to go to summer camp and does not have the cool new toys. When she learns about a camp just for Russian kids, she thinks she will finally fit in. But the wilds of suburbia did not prepare her for the wilds of the woods. Based on the authors experiences, poetic license […]
A Couch for Llama
Some days you read a book and say, “OMG THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER!” And some days you read a book and say, “What was that all about?” A Couch for Llama is the second one. The whole story is simple: The family couch is loved only as a family can love a couch (it is all used and beat up). Family buys new one. An accident causes the llama to get the new couch. In llama fashion it treats it as only a […]

Valensteins Gettin’ Some Lovin’
Even monsters need some lovin’ in Valensteins by Ethan Long. Part of mostly stand-alone titles, the members of Fright Club do not understand the concept of love. After all who wants to be mushy and all that? However, one member has a different idea about love. This a straight forward story about how sometimes friends do not always do what the others do. But when something is worthwhile, you will do it regardless what others think. The story itself is funny and simple. Of course, […]
Jerome By Heart
I’m not sure what to think of this book. It is very modern with the content but has a soft classic tone to the language. Are you supposed to think the child will (spoiler alert) be gay? (Or I should say, he is gay, but later will come out?) Or are you supposed to believe he is just a pure child? He just cares for (therefore loves) his friend. Simple as that. There is no deeper meaning. The fact the parents are very realistic is refreshing. […]
